How to Keep Your Skin Soft and Moisturized - Naturally

All skin types need to work on keeping their skin soft and smooth, whether you have dry skin, or a more balanced level of moisture, your moisturizer is everything.

There are plenty of natural ingredients that you have in your home that can work at keeping your face and skin well moisturized. If you’re on the lookout for natural remedies for dry skin, then here’s how to keep your skin super soft. These remedies are safe for children and adults alike - we call it a family package!

How to Keep Your Skin Moisturized Naturally

A part of having super soft skin is having the right routine in order. To start with, you’ll want to moisturize from the inside out. What that means is drinking plenty of water, staying hydrated, and eating a healthy diet that can nourish your entire body, including your skin.

If you have very dry skin, then we suggest reducing the temperatures of your shower, and moisturizing directly after that shower with petroleum-free moisturizers, while your skin is still damp. This way your skin is ready to absorb all that added moisture. For really dry skin we recommend applying a natural oil like avocado oil, or sunflower oil before applying your moisturizer or butter. We also recommend occasionally (1-2x per week) exfoliating your skin with a natural scrub to remove dead skin cells, making way for healthier skin to glow in its glory.

What Keeps Skin Soft and Moisturized?

Many ingredients in unnatural moisturizers have ingredients that trap in moisture, but also prevent the skin from breathing and may be harmful down the line. Natural ingredients work with their naturally occurring vitamins and minerals to hydrate skin, they are less irritant, and are life-giving, teaching us and our children how to work with nature rather than against it.

Here are some of our favorite butters and oils for moisturizing dry skin naturally at home:

  • Aloe Vera- Aloe vera can improve your skin’s ability to absorb moisture while it hydrates your skin. That’s why it’s a great ingredient to pair up with your favorite hydrating oil. Together they can work at effectively penetrating and moisturizing the skin. Aloe vera will also supply great relief for most skin conditions if you’re experiencing a rash or discomfort during your transition from chemical to natural deodorants.

  • Coconut Oil- coconut oil has a plethora of skin benefits, from its antibacterial benefits all the way to its anti-inflammatory properties. It contains an abundance of vitamin E tocotrienols and has the power to destroy harmful free radicals in the skin and body. You can use coconut oil for dry skin on the face or anywhere else on the body by simply massaging a small amount into the needed area, overnight, or for 20-30 minutes and then rinse off. Coconut oil can also be added to your cleanser to naturally cleanse and moisturize skin all at once!

  • Avocado Oil- Avocado oil contains many fatty acids like steoric, linoleic, linolenic, and palmitic fatty acids. Oleic acid has the ability to act like a moisturizer, can help repair tissue damage and assists other natural moisturizers to penetrate deeper into the skin for longer lasting results. Palmitic acids help soften skin while it forms a protective film on the surface of the skin. The high concentration of vitamin E in avocado oil helps the skin appear silky and healthier while it protects the skin from sun or environmental damage.

  • Olive Oil- Olive oil contains vitamins E, A, and K, with plenty of antioxidants that work at keeping the skin youthful, improves the skin’s elasticity, and quickly heals skin damage and skin wounds. The polyphenols in olive oil helps to maintain the skin’s moisture, especially when diluted with distilled water, or mixed into your favorite butter.

  • Sunflower Oil- Safflower oil won't clog pores, making it a great natural option for both a face and body moisturizer. It can be used on all skin types and works great as a daily moisturizer, while it strengthens the skin’s barrier. It’s anti-inflammatory benefits can help treat many skin conditions without irritating the skin. As a daily moisturizer, sunflower oil should be applied as the first layer to help increase your results with your usual moisturizer. But when using sunflower oil at night for extra treatment, use it as your top layer to seal in that moisture while you sleep.

  • Shea Butter- one of the most effective ingredients for healing and nourishing dry skin naturally is through your natural butters. Shea butter is highly emollient and cures skin dehydration. It is commonly used to heal skin rashes, dry patches, can help heal wounds and lighten the signs of past scars. If you have any allergies to nuts, then shea butter might not be the best butter option for you. If you don’t have any known allergies we still recommend a skin patch test first, just to be on the safe side!

  • Cocoa Butter- Cacao butter is another popular option for those dealing with dry skin, because it is both safe and highly effective at moisturizing skin. It is quickly absorbed into the skin, unlike many other butters, and therefore has a fantastic ability at hydrating the skin without leaving it dry and itchy hours later. It can also help balance the pH level of the skin and works great with other oils for more extreme cases of dry skin.
