Why We Love Baking Soda for a Real Good Clean Up

When we want a simple and honest clean up, we immediately go for baking soda.

Baking soda is our favorite aluminum-free option that isn’t harmful or dangerous, plus, it can be used in direct contact with the skin or hair. It positively removes the bacteria from the underarms that cause body odor, and when used correctly (alongside other balancing ingredients), will give you the confidence to remain active, natural and healthy all day long!

What Exactly is Baking Soda?

Baking Soda, also called, sodium bicarbonate is an all natural crystalline chemical compound that is mined and grounded into a powder form. Nahcolite is the form of sodium bicarbonate that is most natural and has no chemical additives. Baking soda is incredibly versatile and has been used in baking, cleaning and beauty products for centuries, and when stored correctly, has an indefinite shelf-life.

It’s used in baking (hence the name, baking soda) because of its alkaline makeup, which encourages a fluffy texture and expansion when combined with high heat, acidic ingredients and liquids; Making it an ideal leavening agent. As a household cleaning product, it’s used because it’s safe and effective at removing bacteria or grease from bathroom and kitchen surfaces. And many people leave baking soda in their refrigerators because it is believed to absorb foul odors, neutralizing the smell from the collision of all those yummy ingredients.

Why we love Baking Soda in Natural Deodorants

If you want to avoid synthetic ingredients, but use a deodorant that actually works, you’ll want a deodorant with baking soda. The unique alkaline level of baking soda will neutralize the pH level of sweat (sweat being highly acidic) and will help fight body odor.

Baking soda is so effective at killing stinky bacteria, that it’s also used in natural toothpastes as a powerhouse to remove bad breath, plaque and can whiten teeth. It’s both plaque and the bacteria that flourishes in the mouth which lead to bad breath. But thanks to baking soda, bad breath and body odor can be a thing of the past. We can bid a farewell to both toxic ingredients and bad smells all in one wave!

Other Ways You Can Clean with Baking Soda

Baking soda can also be used to soothe indigestion or heartburn. It works as a natural antacid, which soothes the acids that cause heartburn and acid reflux. However, we do recommend everything in moderation. Drinking a pinch of baking soda in a glass of water can relieve the occasional upset stomach, but it shouldn’t be consumed daily because of its high alkaline levels.

Baking soda can be used to clean fruits and vegetables, it can be used as a natural air freshener and can be used to exfoliate the skin and hair, which is why many natural clarifying shampoo recipes almost always include baking soda as a main ingredient.
